Gilbert Arenas return a good thing?

So Gilbert Arenas is apparently going to opt out of the final year of his contract this summer and test the free agent market.  Honestly, if I were the Wizards, I'd probably say, "Okay, go ahead lets see what happens."  You know why?  Because, look at how well they played this year without him.  They've got a good core nucleus of players and promising young talent in Nick Young and Andray Blatche.  Yes Blatche and Young don't look like Kobe or Garnett right now, but you can see them progressing.  In fact Arenas' injury this season was great for Young, because he got a chance to really get some experience under his belt.

As far as Arenas though, he got too big of a head last season.  Remember when he was dropping 60 on the Lakers?  Making like every three he threw up there from two steps over half court?  Yeah we all remember that.  But notice how his play slipped towards the end of the year after he became "Agent Zero," and boasted that he would drop 50 points on the Portland Trail Blazers.  That knee injury on April 4, 2007 almost seemed like bad karma coming around and biting him in the hebachi (a term coined by Arenas after he became Agent Zero).

What he failed to realize was the fact that he hadn't really done anything yet.  Get to the Eastern Conference Championship at least before you start giving yourself nicknames and catch phrases.  Not that I'm hating on the man though, because he is a superb talent.  But one thing I think happened to him was how the Washington area media and fans hyped him up before being a consistent All Star, winning a championship, leading the league in scoring, leading the league in assists, making it past the first round, you know all the stuff guys like Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade have done.  By the way remember three seasons ago when Wade made Arenas look like a chair in the playoff series?

To make things worse he rushes back to action after a friggin knee surgery!  Who comes back and plays in the NBA  just six months after knee surgery?  Take some time of Gil, sheesh.  Michael Jordan missed almost an entire season due to an ankle injury back in the 80s and then came back and dropped 63 on the Celts in the Garden.  Why? Because he didnt rush back too soon.  Bernard King missed almost two years after having knee surgery.  But this guy comes back after a mere 6 months.

So what to do now you ask?  If I were Gilbert I'd go ahead and sit out the rest of the season, rest my knee and come back next year with the Wizards or whoever picks him up.  Face it, the Wizkids developed chemistry and confidence and rhythm while he sat.  Now he's going to come back and try to jack up those same threes but Caron Butler won't be having that, after 66 games where HE was the man.  So go ahead and test free agency Gil, why not?  Look at all the other former Washingtonians who blew up after leaving the nation's capital.  Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace-NBA champions.  Ben Wallace-NBA champion.  Juwan Howard-will never be NBA champion but definitely a wealthy guy so we'll call that blowing up.  Chris Webber-4 time all-star with Sacramento Kings.  Darvin Ham(haha Darvin Ham)- NBA champion with Detroit Pistons.  The list goes on and will include Arenas pretty soon.  Or will it?
